Kaki-shibu (Persimmon squeezed liquid)

Today, we received 30 bags of Kaki-shibu 300㏄ from our overseas customers because they are planning  a “Ikkan-bari” workshop. I found and learn that “Ikkan-bari” is a living tool made by stacking Japanese traditional paper (Washi) and finishing it with persimmon tannin and lacquer. It is a technique created from high-quality Japanese paper based on Chinese lacquer technology. The structure is made by laminating Japanese paper, and it has the characteristics of high strength and lightness. It has kept the tradition of 400 years and inherited the technology at the workshop in Kyoto. ” I was impressed to learn that Kaki-shibu has been used in such techniques that have been handed down since the Edo era. The story is different from persimmon liquid in case of our industry, but astringent persimmon contains a lot of tannins, which are absorbed by fibers such as paper and converted into insoluble substances, which makes the applied ones water resistant and antiseptic.  Regarding the relationship between persimmon tannin and tableware, it is mainly used for temporary tension and astringent paper pattern (eg Ise katagami). Fibers coated with persimmon tannin have the mysterious property of allowing air to pass through but not water, and persimmon tannin serves as an antiseptic. Therefore, it is ideal for temporary tension that allows wet materials to stick and dry. Japanese paper made by applying persimmon liquid is called Kaki-shibu paper. It is strong and water resistant, so it has been used for wrapping paper, floor coverings, and rain-proof clothing. Other than that, Kaki-shibu paper is made into Japanese-style wallpaper. We sell Kakishibu 2000㏄ for professional handcraft man use, 300㏄ of sachets, powdered Kaki-shibu that can be made as much Japanese paper used with Kaki-shibu. Manufacturing using persimmon astringent, a natural material that has been used for a long time in Japan, is wonderful.
